On-device versus cloud: where translation actually runs

Translation on smart glasses can run on the device, in the cloud, or split. The split is what most shipping products do: wake-word and short phrases locally, longer sentences in the cloud.

Local processing is faster and keeps audio off a server. Cloud processing handles more languages and unusual phrasing.

The practical question for a buyer is what leaves the device, and whether the vendor says so plainly. Products that do not answer that should be treated as cloud-only.
